The Band History
Back in 1993 bass player Lucy Heatlie,
songwriter Alex Furr and
guitarist Lee
Oades met at Chamberlain Halls of Residence at
Southampton University. They quickly formed a band known as
'The Promised' with fellow guitarists Andy Lunn and Oli Thomas
with Ella Lewis on the drums. Ten weeks after their initial
meeting they played their first gig to a select audience at
Chamberlain Hall.
In 1994 the band changed from 'The Promised' to 'Carp Fever'
(Lucy, Alex, Oli and Ella) and once more in 1997 to Missing
Molly (Lucy Alex and Lee). In March 1998 Missing Molly recorded
their first and only album 'Live at The Dolphin'. This CD featured
18 original tracks all written by Lucy, Lee and Alex. Some of
these songs would turn out to be classics such as 'Runaway',
'Listen to the high' and 'Two'.

After a very successful run, Missing Molly finally parted in
1999 when Lee left to pursue his career in Marlborough and Lucy
took herself to America for a year. It was at this time when
Alex, looking for new musicians to perform with formed 'barrington'
with Ali Gudgeon (drums and percussion), Jack Dale (Lead Guitar),
Erika Innes (vocals) and Matt Jones (bass and saxophone).
Rapidly making a name for itself as a great original live act
barrington recorded their 6 track EP 'Waking Moments on a Sunday
Morning' in 2000 with the help of Lucy on keyboard, who had
by now returned from her American travels.
Many changes were in store for the barrington, and after the
sad departure of Erika to her home country of Canada, Jen
Allan stepped into the spotlight and took over
as lead female vocalist. Adam Onyett
came in to replace Jack on lead guitar and when Matt decided
to travel to Spain for a year barrington recruited Bas Terraz
on Bass and Paul Overton on Saxophone.
Yet more changes were to come to the band when Ali went AWOL
and was replaced by Jim Baker on the drums. It was this line
up of Alex on vocals and acoustic guitar, Adam on lead, Lucy
on vocals and keys, Jen on vocals, Bas on bass, Paul on sax
and Jim on drums that recorded the 13 track 2001 album 'Recreation
for Beginners'.
Since 'Recreation for Beginners' the band
has evolved again. With the departure of Jim who left for a
job on the QE2, Ian Comley (November 2001) stepped in on drums.
May 2002 saw Nathan Thomas
replace Bas on bass guitar after Bas started teaching as a full
time profession.
Possible the most influential new member of the band is that
of drummer John Froggatt (June
2002), who joined after Ian's University studies became a priority.
After Nathan left to persue his travels round India Al Manders
stepped into the fray but due to University and other band commitments
James Tinney (May 2003)
replaced him.
During a radical shakeup in the spring of 2003 both Lucy, Jen
and Lennie
on sound left for personal reasons
leaving barrington as the rock / funk 4 piece that it is now.
There have been many new faces in barrington over the past
three years but the continual recruitment of top class musicians
has added to the core sound that is unique to barrington. The
distinctive melodies and lyrics are just one of the many reasons
barrington have such a large and loyal fan base today.
